Whiskey

Whiskey at T.J.'s Fine Wine and Liquor in Brandon, Mississippi: what it is, how to choose it, and the brands on our shelf.

Tennessee, Canadian, Irish and rye, all in one aisle.

How to choose

Tennessee whiskey is filtered through charcoal, which makes it softer and a little sweeter than bourbon.

Canadian whisky is built for mixing and it is very good at it. Ginger ale, lemonade, cola, all fair game.

Irish whiskey is triple distilled and light, which makes it the easiest thing to hand someone who says they do not like whiskey.

Rye is the spicy one. If your Old Fashioned tastes too sweet, rye is the fix.

Common questions

What is whiskey?
Whiskey is a distilled spirit made from fermented grain and usually matured in wood. The grain recipe, country, still, barrel and ageing rules create categories such as bourbon, rye, Scotch, Irish whiskey and Canadian whisky.
How are whiskey and bourbon different?
Bourbon is one legally defined type of American whiskey. Whiskey is the broader family, while bourbon must use at least 51 percent corn and new charred oak containers. Other whiskeys follow different grain, origin and ageing rules.
How should I compare whiskey labels?
Compare the category, country, proof and age statement first. A stated age refers to the youngest whiskey in the bottle. Words such as straight, single malt and bottled-in-bond have defined meanings that make the shelf easier to read.
