How to choose
Check for one hundred percent agave on the label. If it does not say it, the bottle is mixed with other sugars and it is the reason people blame tequila for their morning.
Blanco, reposado, añejo. Blanco is unaged and bright, best in margaritas. Reposado spends a few months in barrel and sips nicely over ice. Añejo is a year or more and drinks like whiskey.
Cristalino is añejo with the color filtered out. Smooth, sweet, popular as a gift.
For a pitcher, buy the liter. For sipping, buy the smaller bottle of something better.

- What makes a spirit tequila?
- Tequila must be produced in authorized areas of Mexico from blue Weber agave under Mexican rules. A bottle labeled 100 percent agave uses only agave sugars; other tequila may include a limited amount of other permitted sugars.
- What is the difference between blanco, reposado and añejo tequila?
- Blanco is unaged or briefly rested. Reposado spends at least two months in oak, while añejo spends at least one year in smaller oak vessels. Extra añejo ages for at least three years.
- How do I read a tequila label?
- Look for the category, the 100 percent agave statement and the NOM number identifying the authorized producer. Age terms describe time in oak, not a quality ranking, so choose the style that suits how you plan to pour it.
